Tim Broad’s Journey to the Frozen South

At Stack Electrical, we go where the work takes us—even if that means venturing to one of the most extreme environments on the planet: Antarctica.

Our very own Tim Broad, an experienced Electrical Inspector, recently embarked on a mission to Scott Base to conduct crucial electrical warrant of fitness inspections. And let’s just say—it wasn’t your typical worksite.

Why Inspecting Antarctica’s Electrical Systems Matters

Scott Base is New Zealand’s research hub on the ice, a place where scientists study everything from climate change to marine life. With temperatures plummeting below freezing, reliable electrical systems are not just a convenience but a lifeline.

Tim’s role was to ensure that vehicles, portable containers, site and critical equipment were up to standard so the base could continue operating safely and efficiently.

Getting there was an adventure. Tim flew down in a Lockheed C130J Hercules (definitely not business-class comfort!). Upon landing, he was met with a blast of pure Antarctic air before diving into the job.

Bulldozer and Hagglund snow vehicles checked by our electrical inspector, Tim.
  • Vehicle Inspections: From bulldozers to the iconic Hagglund snow vehicles, Tim checked electrical systems designed to withstand brutal Antarctic conditions.
  • Remote Hut Inspections: Some sites, including historic huts built by early explorers like Scott and Shackleton, were only accessible by snow transport.
  • Unexpected Visitors: Penguins also inspected Tim’s work. (There have been no reports of beak-related interference.)

After completing all necessary checks, it was time to head home—but not before one final surprise: a massive cruise liner near Scott Base (talk about an unexpected sight in the icy wilderness!).

Now back in NZ, Tim’s insights from this extreme environment will help Stack Electrical continue delivering top-tier inspection services, no matter how challenging the conditions.
