Overview

Stack Electrical was contracted to upgrade the electrical systems at Z Energy’s JOFS Jet Fuel Storage Facility at Christchurch Airport. The project involved the installation of a new main switchboard and the migration of control functionality from the aged main switchboard PLC (PLC1) to a new Bridger PLC (PLC2). The upgrade addressed issues with the existing system, including reduced technical support and limited availability of spare parts, and aimed to establish a modern and robust control platform for the facility.

Scope of Work

The scope of work focused on enhancing the PLC system, including:

  • Installation of New PLC System: The new Bridger PLC2 was installed to replace the outdated PLC1, integrating key control modules and power supplies to enhance system functionality.
  • Migration of Control Functions: Key control functions, including emergency shutdown (ESD) and tank control, were migrated to the new PLC2 system, ensuring improved safety and operational reliability.
  • SCADA Integration and Commissioning: The PLC upgrade was integrated with new SCADA monitors, enabling enhanced control and monitoring capabilities across the terminal.

Outcome

The PLC upgrade has significantly improved the reliability and safety of Z Energy’s Christchurch Airport terminal. The new PLC2 system provides enhanced control over critical site functions, reducing downtime and operational risks. The integration with SCADA offers improved monitoring and control capabilities, allowing Z Energy to maintain efficient, compliant, and safe operations. The successful cutover and commissioning of the new control system have provided a future-proof platform that supports ongoing operational needs and safety compliance at the terminal.
